When you stand in front of the entrance to the cemetery, you will behold the gateway to an itinerary through the past. The green vault shaped by trees makes a ceiling for this open-air museum. You will walk by manifestations of architecture and sculpture, expressive and ideological designs, beautiful spots and surprising views.

The Municipal Cemetery of Granada is in the heart of the Dehesa del Generalife (Generalife Meadow), as part of the landscape and historical monuments of the Alhambra, a short distance from the entrance to the Nasrid Palaces. It hosts the graves of a large number of important figures in all fields of the city’s cultural, social, economic and political history.

It is part of the city’s cultural heritage, and hosts, especially in the early gardens, relevant examples of the architecture and funerary sculpture of the Romantic and subsequent periods, all catalogued, as realized by significant local and foreigners artists.

In one of the sections there is the only archaeological remain that have survived: the Alixares Arab Palace (XIII/XIV Century). Therefore, the Municipal Cemetery of San José de Granada is one of the most emblematic burial sites in Spain.

- October to November: at 11:00 am.
- March to May: Morning group: at 11:00 am.
- June to September: 10:00 am. At 8.00 pm.

How to get it

The Cemetery of San José (St. Joseph) is located in the quaint privileged complex of monuments of the Alhambra. To access the cemetery there are several possibilities, from urban buses, private transport, or walking from different parts of the city.

Bus lines:
- To the Cemetery (departures every hour): Line 13 (Puerta Real); Line 34 (Gran Vía, stop Cathedral).
- To the Alhambra, (departures every 8-10 minutes): Line 30 (Gran Vía, stop Cathedral).

By Car:
- New Access by road to Sierra Nevada, (Dir. Alhambra).
- Traditional access through Realejo.

On foot:
- From Plaza Nueva.
- From Realejo.
- From the Paseo de los Tristes.
