Details
The Salt Flats of Cabo de Gata are located between the coastline and the mountains, forming one of the most important wetlands in southeastern Spain. Covering over 400 hectares, they are home to more than 100 species of birds, including flamingos, grey herons, and black-winged stilts. These salt flats also preserve a long-standing salt harvesting tradition and are now one of the only three still active in Spain, producing up to 40,000 tons of salt each year. Did you know that their rare pink fleur de sel is unique in its kind?
During our excursion, we will enjoy a guided visit to the salt flats and observe the birds that inhabit this remarkable ecosystem.
We will also head to the iconic Arrecife de las Sirenas, a volcanic rock formation whose sharp peaks rise from the sea beside a lighthouse built on the remains of the old San Francisco de Paula Castle (1863). Its name comes from sailors mistaking the monk seals once found here for mermaids. From the viewpoint near the lighthouse, we will enjoy an unbeatable panoramic view of the Mediterranean, an ideal location to learn more about the geology and wildlife of the area.
We will then visit Playa de las Salinas, a beach over 5 kilometers long, perfect for a refreshing swim along its shoreline of sand and pebbles. Weather permitting, we may enjoy a snorkeling session in its crystal-clear waters. As part of the route, we will also access a hidden cove not included in regular tourist itineraries, where we can enjoy the tranquility and a light picnic.
This sustainable picnic includes locally sourced products: fresh tomatoes seasoned with salt from Cabo de Gata’s salt flats, artisan bread or picos, seasonal fruit, and your choice of local beer or wine, along with water and soft drinks.
All of this will be guided by a local expert who will share insights into the geography, wildlife, history, and culture of the natural park. Transportation is provided from Almería, with pick-up from your accommodation in a private, air-conditioned van. Throughout the day, we will stop for panoramic views and photo opportunities.
